As always, bits are such a peronnally opinion between the horse and rider, I'm usre you guys will come to an agreement! :)
FWIW - here's my thoughts
This is actually exactly the bit I am considering going with for Farley. Karen Chaton uses this bit (I believe) on her horse Chief. I wouldn't consider this a severe bit, especially at the beginning of a ride. :) It sure beats them pulling and pulling and pulling (yes, some of that is training and proper preperation, but some of it, is just the way it is). The constant pulling at the beginning of the ride makes me sore and I ride worse later on.
The problem I have is that it's a crap shoot - sometimes she an angel, sometimes she's not.....so I'm thinking about riding in this type of bit at the beginning of every race just in case. After all, as long as she isn't pulling on me, it will feel practically the same as her other one!
OK - I take that back. What I want is that bit, but with a level 2 mouth peice - some tougue relief, with very little palete pressure (which she HATES).
So is the new guy at your place??? How's it goin???
Well this guy is extremly responsive to the bit, which is great! But I want to make sure he is comforitable first. So we will see what happens. I don't think this bit and bridel will come with him, so I will probably put him in a snaffle for training at home until I find what I like for him.
i find I can use a REALLY mild snaffle, or even a hackamore at home. Even if I have to step it up for a ride, I like the fact that Farley can be comfy for 90% of the time she's under saddle. If I did "upgrade" her bit it would only be for the first 15 miles or so, so it wouldn't be more than 2-3 hours...
Or it could be that I'm just trying to find an excuse to buy another bit. I love them. LOL.
Speaking of our ride, I meant to order the map! EEEK! Better do that soon, not that we won't be able to buy one there, but I like to be prepared. Ok and I have a map fetish!! Haha!
I live in the majestic Redwoods on the California coast. I was born there, raised there and still live there today. I love the Redwoods and everything about them and the amazing ecosystem that they live in. My parents helped found an environmental education organization (Pescadero Conservation Alliance) when I was a kid and have grown up along side this great organization. In the last couple of years I discovered that I share the same passion for educating the public on environmental issues as my parents did when they first helped found the Pescadero Conservation Alliance. Although not all my volunteer persuits follow PCA, I strongly believe in the organization and its amazing people!
When not trying to figure out how to save the world, I am generally out enjoying nature either on the back of my horse or on my own two legs (although I vastly prefer the four legged version).
Happy Trails!

I'll probably chat with you about bits some more!
Thanks!
